FAQ
Pierre Players is a community theater organization providing entertainment to the community and an outlet for those who love the theater. Pierre Players strives to bring the audience into the moment!
Community theater is theater made by, with and for a community. Community theater contributes to the cultural life of the community through theatrical experiences. PP considers it's community to be the greater part of central South Dakota.
Pierre Players is a great way to be involved in a group project and meet people from various segments of the community that you may otherwise never have the chance to meet. Pierre Players provides an opportunity to network with others who share your passion of the theater. There are thousands of Pierre Players stories that have unfolded throughout the productions and years, come be one of them.
Sometimes is takes a small platoon, other times a small army. PP utilizes the skill of all kinds of local artisans; from construction carpenters, painters, musicians to electricians. PP needs many other volunteers as well; help by distributing flyers, working on committees, striking a set, or work the concession stand. It really is the community that runs this company. It is also a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. Learn more on the
Volunteer page.
Pierre Players typically runs a show every few months – four or five shows per year. Pierre Players advertises through the local radio stations, as well as local print media and on PP’s Web site. You can also contact board members to get information on upcoming shows.
There are many shows that offer opportunities for the director to only require certain actors at rehearsals, or for part of a rehearsal. Directors will work with schedule conflicts, please have those times in mind when auditioning.
Come in, fill out a signup sheet, have a seat in the theater. The director will ask the group of auditioners to read from a script of the show. You may contact the director before auditions to read the script and get a feel for the show and the characters, but it is not necessary. Depending on the show, you may be asked to sing, yell or jitterbug. Things are usually done as a group activity, so have fun.
Long before the season starts, PP members who are part of the Programming Committee begin reading scripts. Outside suggestions for shows are also sought. The Programming Committee meets several times throughout the year to discuss and debate potential scripts. Things which come into play when discussing a potential show include the local talent pool, potential directors, the cost to produce a show and many other factors. The committee recommends a slate of shows, which then go before Pierre Players’ Board of Directors for final approval.
The season is generally announced at the final production of the current season, late summer to early fall.
Directors are sought out by our board, committees and staff. If you are interested in Directing a production for the company; do contact staff, the board or committee members.
